He was born in Chennai in 1956. He Graduated in 1978 from Madras College of Art and Crafts with Post Diploma in Painting.
He joined the Lalit Kala Academy workshop at Garhi Village, New Delhi in 1979, He worked in several media like ceramics, Litho and etching. In 1981-84, he was a recipient of the National Scholarship and worked under the guidance of K.M. Adimoolam. During the period he began to work on a series title “Mystic Valley” which popularized his artistic vision and brought him instant recognition.
In 1986 Muralidharan was selected for the festival of India exhibition in Sweden and was also a Guest Artist at Stockholm College. In 1993 he went to Mackintosh school of Arts, Scotland on a Charles Wallace Trust Fellowship. In 1998 he received the government of India Senior Fellowship for a two years research into his own work.
Muralidharan has participated in four solo over 30 group exhibitions including the 7th Triennale India, New Delhi and the parallel Document in Germany. He has also attended several artist camps all over the country. His awards include the national Award, 1994 and from the lalit Kala Academi of Orissa, the Chitrakala Parishad, Bangalore and the Oviam Nunkalai Kuzhu, Chennai in 1989-90. Muralidharan’s works are part of several collections-including the National Gallery of Modern Art, Delhi, the lalit kala Academy, Delhi and Chennai, as well as many Private collections in India and abroad.
