ARTIST STATEMENT

From my childhood I was very fond of paintings of Indian masters like Husain, Bendre, Raza, Suza, Jehangir Sabawala, Bikash Bhattacharya and Ganesh Pyne.  However, my blind love was for the Bengal School artist like  Nandalal Bose, Abanindranath Tagore, Gagonendranath Tagore, Hemen Majumder, Atul Bose, Haren Das, Binod Bihahi, Ramkinkar, Jamini Roy and Gopal Ghosh. Their mastery always inspired me and I learnt a lot from their magical techniques.
My father, Shri Maniklal Chatterjee, a noted artist of the Bengal School Art movement, was not only my first art teacher, but also my friend, philosopher and guide.  He taught me how to use water colour, wash and tempera. With his blessings and guidance, I have developed the ability to confidently nurture any medium.
Over the past ten years, having experimented with various subjects and media, I find that I am best able to express my thoughts and feeling through a mixed-medium environment.   The playfulness of transparency, the softness and interesting crosshatch texture helps me to establish the spirit of my subject.   I am at ease while weaving with layers of colours, sometimes making them opaque.  My colours reflect the sensitivity of my subject - that is my quest.   I strive to recreate the finer emotions of individuals; I try to evoke the silence in the heart of nature; I look for the history of life’s rhythm; I seek happiness in the shambles of human society.  My brush is tinged with fantasy and nostalgia as I search for the mystic of muted eloquence.
