The World Of Mario – Cymroza Art Gallery : 5 to 17 Jan 2009
As a toddler Mario de Miranda was given a sketch book by his mother to prevent him from defacing the walls of his home. From there, began an incredible artistic journey which recorded eras, cultures and various parts of the globe. Three years ago Mario asked architect Gerard da Cunha to do a book on his life’s work. Gerard began collecting his drawings from various sources and collected 8000 drawings spanning, his childhood, college days, photographs, his stint with the Current and Times of India, and his travels to various parts of the world and much more. The book was released a few months ago and has become a collector’s item.
Gerard and Cymroza Art Gallery has now brought to Mumbai his entire collection in the form of an exhibition which is aptly called “The World of Mario”. On display for the first time are Mario’s legendary childhood diaries where he did a drawing a day recording life and humor around him and developing his inimitable style. There are sections on Dogs, Calendars, children’s drawings and it has a total of 60 sections. It is probably the largest collection of a single artist. The main exhibition is in the form of 22 panels which have been organized chronologically and displays the best of Mario’s work from each part of his life. The last part of the exhibition consists of Limited Edition Prints, Portfolios and Art Merchandise of the artist including cards and tiles.
The Mumbai exhibition is the first stop of this incredible exhibition, which will travel to various cities of India and then eventually abroad and which will also include a film on Mario which is almost ready.
